Bituminous Aluminium Paint: Heavy-Duty UV Shielding & Rust Protection

Bituminous Aluminium Paint (often referred to simply as Aluminium Bitumen Paint or Solar Reflective Paint) is a high-performance protective coating that combines a solvent-based bitumen binder with fine leafing aluminium flake pigments.
When applied, the aluminium flakes float to the surface of the wet paint film to form a continuous, overlapping metallic shield over the dark bitumen base. This unique structure solves bitumen’s main weakness—UV degradation—while providing superior thermal reflection.
Key Characteristics & Benefits of Aluminium Paint
- High Solar Reflectivity: Reflects up to 70–80% of direct sunlight and infrared radiation, significantly lowering heat absorption on roofs and external storage vessels.
- UV Shielding: The leafing aluminium top layer blocks ultraviolet rays, preventing the underlying bitumen film from chalking, cracking, or turning brittle.
- Dual Waterproofing & Corrosion Protection: Combines bitumen’s moisture-impermeable barrier with the oxidation-resistant properties of aluminium.
- Aesthetic Finish: Dries to a bright, metallic silver-chrome finish, concealing dark bitumens or bare metal surfaces.
Main Uses of Aluminium Paint
At Afritec Steel Fabricators, we use Bituminous aluminium paint engineered for exterior surfaces exposed to heavy sun exposure and weather elements:
- Metal & Felt Roofing: Seals and protects corrugated galvanized iron (CGI) sheets, bitumen roofing felt, asphalt roofs, and roof flashings.
- Elevated Steel Structures & Tanks: Applied to the exteriors of steel water storage tanks, structural steelwork, pipe networks, and industrial gantries to control internal temperatures and prevent rust.
- Gutters & Downspouts: Protects external metal rainwater systems from rust while matching metallic aesthetics.
- Substrates: Performs effectively over ferrous metals, weathered galvanized steel, asphalt, concrete, and existing bitumen coatings.
Technical Comparison: Bituminous Aluminium vs. Black Bituminous Paint
| Feature | Standard Black Bituminous Paint | Bituminous Aluminium Paint |

| Finish / Appearance | Deep gloss to semi-gloss black | Reflective metallic silver |
| UV Resistance | Poor (chalks and cracks under prolonged sun) | Excellent (leafing aluminium shields against UV) |
| Thermal Performance | Absorbs heat (increases surface temperature) | Reflects heat (reduces ambient indoor temperature) |
| Coverage Rate | ||
| Typical Use | Foundations, basements, tank interiors, timber | Metal roofs, steel tank exteriors, exposed pipework |
How to Use Bitiminous Aluminium Paints
- Surface Preparation:
- Bituminous Surfaces: Ensure existing felt or bitumen undercoats are thoroughly clean, dry, and fully cured (typically minimum 14 days after applying standard black bitumen) to prevent bleeding.
- Metal Surfaces: Remove loose rust, mill scale, and dirt using wire brushes. Treat active rust with a rust converter or suitable zinc primer before coating.
- Mixing: Thoroughly stir the paint before and during application. Aluminium flakes settle quickly to the bottom of the tin; consistent agitation ensures an even leafing coat and consistent silver finish.
- Application Method: Apply 1 to 2 coats using a soft brush, short-nap roller, or airless spray. Avoid excessive re-brushing over fresh paint, as this disturbs the leafing layer of aluminium flakes.
- Drying Time: Surface dry in 2 to 4 hours; complete drying and curing occur within 12 to 24 hours depending on ambient humidity and air movement.
