What is Bituminous Paint

Bituminous paint (often referred to as bitumen paint) is a low-cost, dark and heavy solvent-based protective coating designed to provide robust waterproofing and corrosion resistance. Derived from refined petroleum asphalt, it forms a thick, hydrophobic barrier that prevents moisture, oxygen, and chemicals from contacting underlying substrates.

  • UV Limitation: Standard black bituminous paint degrades under prolonged direct ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which can lead to chalking or brittleness. Steps in applying Bituminous Paints

  1. Surface Preparation: Clean the substrate to remove rust, mill scale, grease, oil, dirt, and loose flaking paint. Steel should ideally be wire-brushed or grit-blasted; concrete must be fully cured and free of laitance. Ensure the surface is thoroughly dry before application unless using a specialized wet-surface formula.
  2. Priming: Uncoated concrete or masonry may require a diluted primer coat (bituminous paint thinned with mineral spirits) to ensure deep pore penetration.
  3. Application: Apply using a stiff-bristle brush, short-nap roller, or airless spray equipment. Maintain uniform film thickness without over-brushing.

Limitations and Best Practices

  • Overcoating Restrictions: Conventional decorative oil-based or emulsion paints cannot be applied directly over bitumen, as the bitumen will bleed through topcoats.
  • Temperature Limits: Bituminous films soften at high temperatures and become brittle in freezing conditions; avoid application in extreme thermal environments without specialized elastomeric additives.
  • Ventilation: Due to organic solvent content, apply in well-ventilated outdoor environments or under active forced ventilation when working in confined spaces. Use appropriate organic vapor respirators during application.
  • Curing: Allow complete drying between coats. Solvent evaporation is required before exposing the film to continuous water immersion or backfilling soil against concrete walls.
